Questions about pet food recalls
How do I check if my pet's food has been recalled?
Compare the brand, product name, and lot or best-by code on your bag or can with the recalls listed here and in FDA's notice. A recall usually covers specific lots, so the code printed on the package is what confirms whether yours is included.
What should I do if my pet's food is on the list?
Stop feeding it, keep the package so you have the lot number, and follow the return or refund steps in the company's notice. If your pet has eaten it and seems unwell, call your veterinarian. Our step-by-step recall guide covers switching foods and reporting a problem to FDA.
Where does this list come from?
It is read directly from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's animal and veterinary recall list, which covers pet food, treats, supplements, and veterinary products. Each entry links to FDA's official notice. The list is refreshed from FDA every 12 hours.
Why are so many recalls for raw or freeze-dried food?
Most recent pet food recalls involve Salmonella or Listeria, and raw and freeze-dried products are not cooked to a temperature that kills those bacteria. FDA notes that these bacteria can also make the people who handle the food sick, so wash hands and bowls after handling a recalled product.
