Hazelnuts: Safe for Dogs and Cats?

A plain, shelled hazelnut is not considered toxic to dogs, but nuts are high in fat and can still cause choking, obstruction, digestive upset, or pancreatitis.

Safe serving: A small piece of plain, fresh, shelled hazelnut with no salt, coating, chocolate, sweetener, or seasoning.

Hazelnuts should generally not be offered to cats. Even though the nut is not considered inherently toxic, it is a choking and obstruction risk and is high in fat and calories.
