Salt: Safe for Dogs and Cats?

A small amount of salt from table food is unlikely to hurt a dog with access to water, but large amounts can cause salt toxicosis, a serious condition with a high fatality rate even with treatment.

Toxic principle: Sodium ion excess (salt toxicosis / hypernatremia)

Watch for

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy or depression
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Disorientation

Cats need only a small amount of dietary salt, and while an occasional salty bite is unlikely to cause harm if water is available, ingesting a large quantity can lead to serious salt toxicosis.
