Ice cream: Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Ice cream combines lactose, high sugar, and high fat, all of which can upset a dog's stomach or worse; sugar-free versions are a separate, serious risk if they contain xylitol.
Toxic principle: Lactose intolerance plus high sugar/fat; xylitol in some sugar-free varieties is toxic and can cause liver failure
Watch for
- Gas, bloating, diarrhea from lactose and sugar
- Obesity and dental issues with regular feeding
- Xylitol exposure (if present): vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures, liver failure
Most cats are lactose intolerant and ice cream's sugar and fat provide no nutritional benefit, so it is not recommended; some flavors and sugar-free versions carry added toxic risks.
Toxic principle: Lactose intolerance plus high sugar/fat; xylitol in sugar-free varieties, chocolate or raisin flavors are toxic
Watch for
- Diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain from lactose
- Xylitol or chocolate exposure (if present): weakness, vomiting, tremors, seizures
