Avocado: Safe for Dogs and Cats?
Avocado flesh is far less dangerous to dogs than the persin warnings suggest, but the pit and skin are serious choking and blockage risks and the fat content can trigger GI upset or pancreatitis.
Toxic principle: Persin (low risk in dogs; primarily a hazard for birds, rabbits, horses, and livestock)
Watch for
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- choking or intestinal blockage from the pit or skin
A small amount of avocado flesh is unlikely to seriously harm a cat, but the pit and skin pose a choking and blockage hazard and the fat content can cause GI upset, so it is not recommended as a treat.
